Controlling Mics-- On/Off & Volume
Probably the most active and important task is controlling (i.e. on/off and volume) all the mics that we use in the service. We use our Mackie 1604 VLZ Pro "mixer" (shown below) to control and mix all the mic inputs into a stereo signal that goes through the system and out to the congregation.
To actually control an individual mic, you use that mic's
1) "mute" switch (which turns on the mic's sound or mutes it)
2) "fader" (which controls the mic's sound volume).

Here's a close-up of a mute and fader on the mixer's #16 channel.* When one engages the mute switch, that mutes that mic's sound and alerts the user with the lighting of the red LED display below it.
* When one moves the fader "up", this increases the mic's sound.
See its easy, right! For the most part, the most of faders will be near the "solo" button for typical use.
FYI-- We use at least the following mics in every service--
- the podium mic;
- the "blue" wireless lavaliere mic for the pastor;
- the "red" wireless lavaliere mic for the person who does the "Words with the Children"; and
- the piano mic.
